The Family Circle Cup is an annual green clay-court tennis tournament which is held in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The tournament began in 1973 and since then it is held every year and is one of the most traditional events in women’s tennis.
The tournament is known as Family Circle Cup as Family Circle magazine has sponsored it. Family Circle has sponsored the event since 1973 and is the longest running sponsor in women’s tennis. The early 70’s was a period when young women had the dreams of playing professional tennis. This is where Family Circle stepped up and the rest they say is history.
The tournament was held at Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island from 1973 to 2000, with the exception of 1975 and 1976 where it was held at Amelia Island. The tournament moved to its current location, Charleston in 2001. Besides great tennis, the tournament also offers many contests, shopping options, science and fitness shows and much more.
