The Bank of the West Classic is an annual hardcourt tennis tournament which is held at the campus of Stanford University, Stanford, California, United States. The tournament started in 1971 and the 2010 edition will mark the 40th year of competition, making it the longest running tennis tournament in the world exclusively for women. The event is a part of the Olympus US Open series which begins with this event itself.
The tournament is known as Bank of the West Classic due to the sponsorship rights which has been since 1992. The tournament is one of the most prestigious on the WTA Tour and the former champions include - Chris Evert, Billie Jean King, Andrea Jaeger, Martina Navratilova, Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams. The tournament offers a prize money of $700,000 with around 33,000 people visiting the venue to witness some of the best tennis action. Many top ranked players participate in the event as it is a Premier event on the WTA Tour.
