The Legg Mason Tennis Classic is an annual hard-court tennis tournament which is held in Washington D.C., United States. It is an ATP World Tour 500 event, which was inaugurated in July 1969 and then became one of the first professional open tennis tournaments held in the US. The tournament is named Legg Mason Tennis Classic from past 17 years because of the sponsorship rights, making it the longest running title sponsorship in North America for a tennis tournament. It is one of the tournament on the Olympus US Open Series which is a six week summer tournament consisting of 9 tournaments.
The Legg Mason Tennis Classic has been a part of many innovative changes in tennis like the blue court, Olympus US Open Series, main draw start on Sunday and instant replay boards on the court. The tournament was played on clay court until 1986, and since then it has remained a hard court tournament.
