The International German Open is an annual clay-court tennis tournament which is held in Hamburg, Germany. In 2009, the tournament was downgraded from ATP Masters 1000 event to ATP World Tour 500 event. The tournament officials were not happy with this move, as the top players were likely to participate in the tournaments with higher points. Thus, the officials were fighting the downgrade, and the case got settled eventually.
The tournament was established in 1892 and the venue of the tournament – Rothenbaum, is among the oldest tennis venue that has been used since 1906. Since then, the event has been Germany’s biggest and most important tennis tournament and in 1912 the Hamburg event was considered to be at par with the Grand Slams. The center court features a beautiful retractable roof with a capacity of 13,200 spectators, which makes it the largest center court in Germany.
