The China Open is an annual hard-court tennis tournament which is held in Beijing, China. The tournament was men’s singles and doubles when it was first inaugurated in 1993. The tournament was then dropped from the ATP Tour calendar, but was reinstated in 2004. In 2004, the WTA event for women’s singles and doubles was shifted to Beijing from Shanghai. Since then, the China Open is a Premier Mandatory event on the WTA Tour.
The 2009 China Open was held at The National Tennis Center, which was built for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The National Tennis Center has a flower-like appearance from a distance, which is designed for natural ventilation to ensure the quality of competitions. In 2006, China Open became the first tournament outside United States to make use of the Hawk-Eye system in match play. The tournament boasts the participation of top 50 women’s players and at least half of the top 30 men’s players according to the regulations.
