The Abierto Mexicano Telcel is an annual clay-court tennis tournament which is held in Acapulco, Mexico. It is one of the 11 ATP World Tour 500 events, which concludes the four tennis tournament “Golden Swing” through Latin America. The event takes place at The Fairmont Acapulco Princess in Acapulco, Mexico. This is a favorite destination amongst the clay court specialists. The men’s event is the ATP World Tour 500 whereas the women’s event is the WTA Tour International event. The tournament has been on the ATP Tour since 1993 and on the WTA Tour since 2001.
When the tournament began in 1993, it was held in Mexico City up till 1998 and again in 2000. The event was relocated to Acapulco in 2001. In 2008, the Abierto Mexicano Telcel was awarded the trophy as the 2007 International Series Gold tournament of the Year. This award recognizes it as the best tournament of the year in its category.
