Valencia Open 500

valencia-openThe Valencia Open 500 is an annual hard-court tennis tournament which is held in Valencia, Spain. The event is currently a part of ATP 500 event. In 2009, the Valencia Open 500 and the Madrid Masters exchanged surfaces and calendar dates, with the Valencia Open 500 becoming an indoor hardcourt event whereas the Madrid Masters becoming an outdoor clay court tournament.

As per the new schedule, the tournament is now held in early November, which serves as a battleground for the best tennis players in an attempt to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals. The venue of the tournament - Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, is a metallic construction with a pointed elliptical look which is around 88 meters long. The tournament began from Valencia in 1995 and then moved to the city of Marbella, Spain for two editions- 1996 and 1997. The tournament was then shifted to Majorca from 1998 to 2002 and finally, in 2003 the tournament shifted back to its current site.

The tournament has made a name for itself for its quality and continuity. The tournament began in 1970 with the winner presented with a wristwatch. Over its 40 years of history, all the World Number 1 players have featured in this tournament and many of them have inscribed their name in Basel’s Golden Book of Winners. Switzerland’s leading sporting event boasts of some of the most impressive list of champions like Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl and many others.

The tournament is Switzerland’s largest sporting event and is one of the most important indoor tournaments in the world. The tournament usually takes place in the last week of October or first week of November and thus, it forms a part of the season-end run for World Finals.

Region-Morgan-Keegan-ChampiThe Regions Morgan Keegan Championships is an annual hard-court tennis tournament which is held in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. The tournament started in 1971 in Salisbury, but was moved to Memphis in 1976. The event is part of ATP World Tour 500 for men’s competition whereas it is an International event on the WTA Tour for women. The venue of the tournament is the Racquet Club of Memphis. This is the only private club in the world which hosts a combined professional indoor event for men and women.

Both the tournaments for men and women are played at the same venue on indoor hard courts each year in February. The primary sponsor of the tournament is Regions Financial and Cellular South. Both the events support the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The tournament was known as U.S. Indoor National Championships in 1977. The stadium constructed for the tournament had a capacity of 5,000 seats with 16 luxury executive suites- the first time in the world, which was built exclusively for tennis.

Rakuten-Japan-Open-Tennis-CThe Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships is an annual hard-court tennis tournament which is held in Tokyo, Japan. The event is the longest-running ATP World Tour Tennis tournament in Asia and thus it is said that Asian Tennis has its roots in the Land of Rising Sun. The first edition of the tournament was held in 1972 and since then it has become one of the biggest tennis events in Japan. The event is also a part of WTA Tour for women and is a Tier III tournament.

The venue of the tournament is Ariake Colosseum, which is an enormous tennis center consisting of 48 tennis courts and the center court features a retractable roof which was one of the first retractable roofs in tennis. The tournament is not well-renowned around the world, but still many top ranked players have featured in this tournament in both men’s as well as women’s competitions.

Legg-Mason-Tennis-ClassicThe Legg Mason Tennis Classic is an annual hard-court tennis tournament which is held in Washington D.C., United States. It is an ATP World Tour 500 event, which was inaugurated in July 1969 and then became one of the first professional open tennis tournaments held in the US. The tournament is named Legg Mason Tennis Classic from past 17 years because of the sponsorship rights, making it the longest running title sponsorship in North America for a tennis tournament. It is one of the tournament on the Olympus US Open Series which is a six week summer tournament consisting of 9 tournaments.

The Legg Mason Tennis Classic has been a part of many innovative changes in tennis like the blue court, Olympus US Open Series, main draw start on Sunday and instant replay boards on the court. The tournament was played on clay court until 1986, and since then it has remained a hard court tournament.
